By this point, you have made up your own mind, as so many of us have. You are from one of two camps. One is the "hasn't Pete suffered enough? The other is the "Pete got exactly what he deserved"
I occupy the former.

“Rose admitted in 2004 that he did bet on baseball. He thought that this would give him a chance to get back into baseball, but baseball only drove the knife deeper...If there was proof that Rose actually managed in an attempt to throw games in order to win bets, I would support his banishment...To date, I am unaware of any such proof...”
FROM WIKI
Following the banning of Pete Rose from MLB, the selection rules for the Baseball Hall of Fame were modified to prevent the induction of anyone on Baseball’s permanent suspension list, such as Rose or Shoeless Joe Jackson. Many others have been barred from participation in MLB, but none have Hall of Fame qualifications on the level of Jackson or Rose.
This is proof of what you said they changed the rules just to spite Rose.
STeinbrenner was such an SOB that Dave Winfield choose to be inducted in the HOF as a Padre not a Yankee. Talk about people in Baseball character, and he owned race horses and gambled on them. What makes you think the gambling didn’t spread to baseball. And George was known to call the manager and tell him what to do on the field.
Remember when Winfield killed that bird with a thrown baseball and the enviro-wackos wanted him arrested? That was great...
I thought that was Randy Johnson.
.
Winfield did it on a throw from the outfield to the infield during practice and Johnson hit a bird on a pitch during a game.
Yes, we know that he lied in the past, the lie was exposed; he agreed to a lifetime ban in exchange for the investigation being called off. So we don’t know what else he has lied about or the extent of what he has covered up.
I like Rose, a lot. Idolized him as a kid and young adult.
One good reason to keep him out is that if he can’t get in then Bonds & McGwire can’t ever get in either.
Would like to see away for him to get in though.
Our present POTUS lied to us straight to our face, and his whole past is sealed from scrutiny.
You have priests and other clergy who molested kids, stole money, and have been racist hustlers.
Guys like Stienbrenner had legal problems with running the companies that made them rich enough to buy into baseball franchises.
Then there are the players who on virtually every team took drugs of one type or another.
Judge lest not ye be judged
Pretty telling when your argument is reduced to "What about all of these people who have done as bad, or worse." I used to punish my children when they displayed such faulty reasoning...
I occupy the “don’t really give two wet craps about base-foot-socc-ockey, but follow these stories out of morbid curiosity” camp :p
Let's set aside the fact that betting on his team and going deep into debt with bookies makes him a juicy blackmail target, as well as those who have rightfully pointed out how his gambling can affect his managerial decisions and the integrity of the game. Instead, does the fact that his admission was made in a sensationalized book that he was hawking mean anything? After all, most people who are truly contrite don't try to shamelessly profit off of their acts of contrition.
Also, what is your take on the fact that he brutally slandered John Doud, the lead investigator who authored the report for 15+ years? History has completely vindicated Doud and his report, yet Rose has yet to apologize to him.
man, you nailed it.
Rose was a great singles hitter...average in everything else. He played long enough to break Cobb’s record, and played most of his games on astro-turf, which no doubt accounted for a lot of those singles.
Didn’t know about Winfield———and people say it’s a dull game,a game for the birds. :-)
.
Pete should have been in the Hall of Fame long ago - he’s the epitome of hustle (in the good old-fashioned, put your best effort out there fashion) and has earned his spot..
Oh come on. During Bowie Kuhn’s time as COMISH, Baseball got caught robbing the HOF and selling memorabilia from their collection. What is worse betting on oneself of stealing?
I agree sometimes relativism isn’t a great excuse. However, this is a game here, and I don’t enjoy it any more because of this BS. I enjoyed watching ROBO Clemens play and the fact that he had so much pain he took meds to keep him in the game he loved seemed not to of interest for a congress to go after him instead of the IRS scandals, Fast and Furious, waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer money and many more pressing REAL EMERGENCIES.
I elect you Pope, you can judge and scold. Me, let the great players play and give me a bowl of beer nuts and a six pack of cold suds and I will be a happy camper
The Hall of Fame rules only permits those who are considered eligible by Major League Baseball to be eligible for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. It’s always been that way.
Had you asked Pete Rose in 1972 why Shoeless Joe Jackson wasn’t in the Hall of Fame, he could have told you succinctly. Shoeless Joe Jackson still isn’t in the hall of fame.
Pete Rose’s accomplishments are in the Hall of Fame.
Rose was involved in one the best plays I ever saw live. Rose always ran to first base on a walk (it was a sprint in his early days and slowed later, but he always ran). One game, he noticed that the catcher was lobbing the ball back to the pitcher and the second baseman and short stop weren’t particularly wary.
Rose walked, sprinted to first, turned the bag, and headed straight to second as the ball was lobbed back to the pitcher.
He beat the pitcher’s throw to second with a head-first slide.
Second base on a walk.
That was the Pete Rose I remember.
But he doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame.
Yup, Charlie was a hustler alright.
Just one man’s opinion, but the baseball hall of fame is a farce. Joe Torre and Tony Larussa were just admitted to the HOF. Nary a word was said that both men managed teams with players who used PEDs extensively, ie, Mcwire,Canseco, A-Rod, Clemons etc. It is hard to believe to think that these guys didn’t know what was going on and did nothing to stop it.
C
That doesn't include HGH. HGH did not become a banned substance until 2005.
That has an effect on whether you admit any manager from the steroid era.
Pete Rose was the first second baseman I saw that attempted to complete a double play by throwing to third. He took the shortstop's throw at second, turned toward first, realized there was no play...then threw to third to try and catch the runner rounding the bag.
The first time he tried it, his third baseman wasn't ready for it...resulting in an error and a run scored.
About a week later, he tried it again...and nailed the baserunner for a 6-4-5 GDP.
The play is not uncommon now, but it was first invented by Pete Rose.
That was the Pete Rose I remember.
But he doesnt belong in the Hall of Fame.
Same guy I remember. And, no, he doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame.
