I don’t like the nasty look I get when I ask for a paper bag. (apparently I just killed a tree).
I don’t like that they give 5% of their profits “back to the community”. They owe the “community” nothing and that 5% has been added to the price of their goods which costs me.
I don’t like the sea of “Obama” stickers in their parking lot.
I don’t like that 90% of their employees are covered with tattoos and ear gauges.
I don’t go anymore.
I agree with all of that....ALL true!
I only go there because my wife likes to buy a few (fortunately ONLY a few considering the prices in that store) items there.
Another myth worth exploding: I have yet to see any study at all which proves that organic food is healthier than non-organic food. It seems to me slapping an organic sticker on some item in the store is just an excuse to charge higher prices. So far I think the whole thing is a scam.
Their logic is so convoluted.
By providing employment at market wages for the locals, they are indeed giving to the community. Every dollar they pay in wages eventually ripples into 3 or 4 dollars.
By charging higher than market prices they could be said to be removing money from the local economy. Money that could be put into other, more productive purposes.
Interesting, I’ve never bothered to ask and I have never received anything but a paper bag from my local Whole Foods.
Except the 5% thing, none of your other gripes really apply to my local Whole Foods store either. However, I live in a very conservative area and I’m guessing the circus freaks would be bad for business. I think a lot of people around here shop there because they have a better selection for certain foods than other stores, particularly when it comes to cheeses.
Whole Foods founder and CEO John Mackey would like to revise a previous accusation that Obamacare is a form of socialism.
“It’s more like fascism,” Mackey recently told NPR. “In fascism, the government doesn’t own the means of production, but they do control it — and that’s what’s happening with our health care programs and these reforms.”
The op-ed infuriated Whole Foods’ liberal customer base, Time reported at the time. Some customers boycotted the organic food chain in protest, according to ABC.
