Thank you. That all makes sense, especially the muffs. But I have a gorgeous 14-year-old daughter upstairs. Not going to hide when I hear something. Will send the dog out, sweep and blast. Will get the muffs.
Oh yeah, don’t forget a flashlight. Mine is on a rail with a pressure switch, but you can just duct-tape one to your barrel.

At 14 she is old enough for some training and maybe mature enough for a little room security of her own (muffs too).
Work out a little code, not too complicated so you do not shoot each other.
Pick places where you will make a certain noise so you know who is coming. In all cases positive visual identification is necessary before engagement.
