So what was the treatment the Chinese gave him?

When he left for China in early June 2013, He had lost approximately 60% of the hair on his scalp. When I picked him up at the airport, he had a full head of hair (and I have pics to prove it). According to what he told me, Alopecia Areata as described by his doctor in Guangzhou was a result of an imbalance between his liver and kidneys.

His treatment was pretty rigorous: two large bowls of an herb soup twice a day (I don’t know the English names or availability of these herbs in the US) that he said tasted awful, twice weekly doctor’s office treatments using a scalp stimulant (consisting of a very small mallet with metal spikes in it, beaten around his head to the point of drawing blood), and daily heat lamp treatments on his skull.

He did come back with a treatment kit in case of relapse consisting of 10 ml bottles of some herbal substance, two other topical lotions (alcohol based) to put on any new spots that cropped up, and I had to buy him fresh ginger and Brandy to soak the ginger in then rub it on his scalp on any bald spots that showed up. None have so far.

Since the labels are in Chinese, I cannot read them, but he said they were over the counter medicines there.

As I said earlier, it is tough to argue with dramatic results. I have all the medicine bottles but I would have to get them translated to tell you what they are. I would imagine they can be found online with some digging.

It is rumored to contain generous dollops of the exotic, tropical "Hairy Fuzz Plant".
