Pop Star Cliff Richard denies sex assault claims

Pop veteran Sir Cliff Richard has denied claims regarding a sexual assault in the 1980s on a young boy, after his Berkshire home was searched by police.

According to South Yorkshire Police, officers entered property in Sunningdale on Thursday and conducted searches - but the owner was not present at the time and no arrests were made.

In a statement, Sir Cliff said: "The allegations are completely false. Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen.

"However, the police attended my apartment in Berkshire today without notice - except, it would appear, to the press."

The 73-year-old, who is understood to be in Portugal, added: "I am not presently in the UK, but it goes without saying that I will cooperate fully should the police wish to speak to me.

"Beyond stating that today's allegation is completely false, it would not be appropriate to say anything further until the police investigation has concluded."

Detective Superintendent Matt Fenwick stressed that the investigation was in its "really early stages" and explained: "A search warrant has been granted after police received an allegation of a sexual nature dating back to the 1980s. This involved a young boy under the age of 16 years."

Police have also confirmed that the searches are not linked to Operation Yewtree, which was launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Sir Cliff Richard, who launched his musical career in the '50s, was knighted in 1995.

It looks like if you hate someone and wanted to ruin his life, all you have to do is accuse him of molesting a child. It doesn’t matter how long ago... just accuse him.

That will create a frenzy that will be sure to ruin his life.

The irony is that Cliff Richard had his film debut in the movie ‘Serious Charge’ about an unmarried vicar, played by Anthony Quayle, framed by Cliff's thug of a brother, allegedly, accused of interfering with him.

Would not surprise me either but it would sadden me. I was never a fan of Cliff but did enjoy a number of his hits over the years. He was big in the UK but never made a breakthrough in the US so he enjoys a certain anonymity. He was also very instrumental in furthering the early career of Olivia Newton John.

mmhmm. I would say this is very sad if true, especially considering what he did with Graham. I understand they were very good friends.
