British scientists are stranded after their Antarctic base lost power in the depths of winter as temperatures plummeted to a record low of minus 55C.
There is no way of rescuing the 13 researchers from the Halley VI Research Station - which has been hit by a 19-hour blackout - for months until the hostile winter subsides.
The British Antarctic Survey admitted it was a 'serious incident' and has suspended all experiments as the workers heat up emergency accommodation which has not been used for months.
Some of the fallout from the power cut, which happened a week ago but was only revealed today, is still ongoing as the workers face sleeping on the floor of a garage.
But despite the perilous conditions the scientists, 10 English, one Scottish, one Romanian and one Polish, have remained upbeat - and even Tweeted about their ordeal.
Renewable energy engineer Anthony Lister wrote: 'Whilst all the fun was happening at #halley6 (not that it's over) we had the lowest ever recorded temps down here at -55.4. Which was nice.

Wow, I hope they will be OK!
A. Gore said the ice is gone, the science is proved!
-55C = -67F, per the online converter.
So the record low in Colorado is 6 degrees different than the record low there.
bump
That’s cold enough to freeze farts.
Where I live in NC it did not get above 65 F all day. In NC, In August? AGW my butt.
And the prequel ‘remake’ of The Thing.
-67....-59! Wow that’s where you throw your hot coffee in the air and it freezes before it hits the ground?!
Especially if they’re the kind the champ cut in 1964 when he disgraced himself and lost the International Farting Contest, which was held at Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto.
There was a story a couple of years ago about a watch that was buried in a container at the North Pole by some grandson or the like of an explorer and and about five years later, was found by a Danish or Swedish boy on a beach.
Yet they never say what caused the power loss.
You KNOW what that means, right?
ETs.
According to the Wikipedia, that was in 1985 at Maybell, elevation 5992 ft, population 70, in northwest Colorado. I would have expected the summit of Pikes Peak or such.
They have one Romanian and one Polish as part of their team?
Lose one of em and improve your chances by 50%!
Settled science.
It’s cold enough to freeze the balls off a billiard table. ..
What. I just heard on the news the other day that all the ice was melting in Antarctica and all the penguins were migrating to New Jersey. Have one of the “scientist” run outside and flag down one of those Greenpeace boats for a ride to someplace warmer like Iraq or Syria.
Prayers up for them. I had a close friend of mine from college spend a summer at the south pole. He was a native Canadian and told me when he got back, “Even Canadians have limits!” He doesn’t bitch about the Florida heat anymore.
just wait for Al Gores warming! I am sure it wont be long! there is a “consensus” you know!
