It seems to have gotten into the slums in Monrovia and other larger cities. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

One of my fears is it makes it into the even larger slums in/around Lagos. If it does, tens of thousands may die before they get it back under control. Lagos metro has about 20X the number of people of the largest cities in Liberia/SierraLeone/Guinea.

Just be careful not to contaminate yourself or anything with them in the process.

The nitrile gloves would be better. Maybe 2 sets. I’ve seen photog pics of locals in Lagos already wearing those out and about.

There is a pathogen protective process for removing disposible gloves and I think cotton is the cheapest and easiest to wear. Nitrile and surgical latex are good for times when you really know there is a chance of exposure but I just mean for everyday use.

Well, help me answer this question: "You tell me it's OK to go in this room with a woman from DRC who just was brought here from the airport by Lutheran Social Services with a 103 fever using regular PPE, right? Then how come the patients at Emory are in a special, multi-million dollar BL4 unit and everybody from CDC and on the staff are wearing spacesuits?"

Exactly. One look at how Dr. Brantly and Nancy Writebol were brought to Emory shows what utter crap they are shoveling now. I want to see the head of the CDC and all those "experts" in basic PPE treating infected and symptomatic patients. I may as look for unicorns.

BUT

We don't have enough of the right kind of PPE to isolate the "rule out Ebola" patients.

SO

If the CDC took the stance that special PPE was needed, THEN they would have to limit or stop sick arrivals from West Africa and DRC, and we know that THAT they will never do.

ERGO, the PPE we have has to be good enough, because "you go to war with the army you have".

Found this little nugget about Ebola:

http://jvi.asm.org/content/77/18/9733

Cytotoxicity appears to be precisely controlled by a mechanism involving down-regulation of GP expression through a transcriptional RNA editing event by the viral polymerase. The importance of this phenomenon was shown by use of a reverse genetics system for replicating Ebola virus in which a mutation that increases the level of full-length GP expression is significantly more cytotoxic than the wild-type virus

tens of thousands may die before they get it back under control.

Personally, if they can get it under control at all,
hundreds of thousands will die, and that’s in a best
case scenario.

I have my doubts about “control” period.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/ebola-kenya-bars/1316588.html?

Beginning Aug 20, Kenya will bar travelers from the worst hit countries. Kenya Air has announced it will stop flying those routes when that ban hits.

Likely what this will do is speed up the exit plans of anyone who hasn’t who wants to.

We ain’t seen nuthin’ yet.

Central African populations behaved much the same way until the mid 90’s during ebola outbreaks. The outbreak in Kikwit nearly became global just because Kikwit was a fairly urban area (pop 250K). Central Africans have since learned about ‘ebola hygiene’. West Africans will too. The hard way it would appear. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take a continental or global pandemic to teach them.
