THAT is a frightening scenario. How many 30yr old Mamadees sniffle and snot and sweat on all and sundry in the 10 days between when they’re not feeling very well and have recovered enough to be really good spreaders...?

I ran across a fascinating document listing the infective dose of various human pathogens and parasites at this PLOS site. Interesting comparison of Ebola ID and other studied organisms for those interested.

I noticed in Table S1 that the infection route given for Ebola was inhalation.

I know everyone who read the other site saw this. I posted it here for posterity and possible future reference.

If this took out Sirleaf it would get bad over there...

That sounds interesting. Do you happen to know what the name of the programs were? Maybe I can watch them online.

Thanks in advance!

CDC Director Thomas Frieden said about two weeks ago that the spread of Ebola to the US was inevitable due to air travel, and I agree. We are probably the most vulnerable of all the developed countries. Even my community has about a dozen Nigerian students at the local state college.

The issue for us is whether the Ebola outbreaks in America will be confined to easily isolated instances before sufficient vaccines become available, not whether it comes here at all. We can't wall ourselves off from the rest of the world. If Ebola becomes horrifically widespread in Africa, which IMO depends chiefly on Nigeria, it will become a serious health threat in the US too.

Also note that the whole world's economy is very much dependent on exports of strategic materials from sub-Saharan Africa. There will be very serious economic and financial consequences worldwide, including here, if those exports are significantly reduced due to Ebola's effects in Africa.

If demographically significant quarantines are imposed in the US to defeat an impending Ebola epidemic here, our economy might well collapse from that and ensuing panic. The result of such a collapse would be wiping out of personal and business savings, excepting stock equities but definitely including bonds, and a currency exchange. Bill Quick describes this in his novel, _Lightning Fall_, which AFAIK is the ONLY apocalyptic novel to address such issues.

Black Agnes mentioned the spread of Ebola on urban mass transit, which assumes that mass transit systems will operate at all. Those will be the first to be closed down during a significant Ebola quarantine here. Consider the economic implications of that.

I couldn't help but laugh after reading your link and then this:
More Than 700 Infants Exposed To TB At Texas Hospital

EL PASO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — More than 700 infants at an El Paso hospital have been exposed to tuberculosis by an employee infected with the disease, according to public health officials.

The city’s Department of Public Health says the infants along with about 40 employees at Providence Memorial Hospital were exposed.

Officials say they were exposed from September 2013 to August. The employee worked in the hospital’s nursery. Officials said employment and medical records were reviewed to determine which infants and employees were exposed.

Have these people never heard of nosocomial infections? Have they never heard that almost two million nosocomial infections occur per year in the US? Yet somehow that very same group of institutions will not have the same problems with Ebola as with any other pathogen?

I think that column is based upon the studies the authors used to determine infectious dose for each pathogen. I’d have to go back to be sure but I’m fairly sure that’s the case.

It caught my eye as well, though.

Nigeria copped a big break with Sawyer.

Firstly, he was ‘somebody’. So when he crashed out at the airport he was whisked away in a private conveyance to a private hospital. Where he was examined immediately on arrival and placed into a private room.

I do wonder if he was a super spreader like the kid mentioned up thread. Because he was still very much alive 5 days after he crashed out in the airport. Alive and well enough to yank the IV’s out of his arm and attempt to run out of the hospital.

I still think there’s a non zero chance he got capped for this by hospital security or got an injection of ‘somethingorother’ and that’s why so many medicos got it. They were piled on him holding him down. It would explain the ‘hero’ treatment they got after all this was made public.

Nevertheless, had Sawyer been a businessman or an ordinary citizen he may have had to take himself to a hospital or clinic. Riding public transportation along the way for that. And then sit in the ER or waiting room for who knows how long, all the while infecting many people along the way...

But I am heartened by Nigeria’s being a firewall for this. So far.

Tell me about it. One of my hubby’s aunts got c diff during a hospital stay. And she ended up having to have the ‘transplant’ to get rid of that.

*shudder*

I just watched this CNN report from March. Watch it, it’s short, and see how many inaccuracies you come up with.

Oh yeah, much better now.

The disease would have to be pretty bad for me to accept that that particular ‘treatment’ was any better.

Ebola Strikes EPS - 57 Agents Quarantined (Liberia)

As the Ebola virus continues to spread throughout the country like wildfire, the elite presidential guard- the Executive Protection Service, formerly the Special Security Service is the latest hit by the deadly disease.

57 of its officers and agents are currently being quarantined on suspicion of contracting the virus. Information gathered by this paper point to the fact the active EPS agents were being quarantined for attending the funeral and burial of a colleague reportedly died as a result of the deadly virus.

According to a document in the possession of this paper under the directive of the Director of the Presidential elite force-EPS, Col. Frank O. Nyekan, the 57 agents were asked to stay off the job for 21 days for participating in the funeral of Agent Ballah O. Dennis, who finally died on August 15, 2014.

A citation, under the signature of Agent Joseph Kollie, supervisor of the Human Resource Section of the EPS, issued on September 15, 2014, states: “by directive of the administration, through Director Frank O. Nyekan, the below listed employees of the EPS are hereby instructed to report to the office of the professional standard to state the role they played during the funeral service and burial of the late Agent Ballah O. Dennis,” the citation instructed.

The two page-citation further stated: “In the same vein, they are hereby advised to stay away from work until the Professional Standard Section comes up with analytical report and recommendations relative to their roles played during the funeral service and burial of the late agent. Let this administrative instruction claim your attention and act accordingly to avoid future embarrassment,” it warned. Agent Dennis was assigned with the presidential motorcade prior to his demised at the “hands of Ebola”.

According to our sources, the late Agent Dennis, along with other family members, accompanied for medication an ailing relative (named not revealed) to several hospitals in Monrovia, including the SDA Cooper, SOS, ELWA, and government- run John F. Kennedy Medical Center, but was rejected on the basis of his condition.

Later at the Goodwill Clinic in Fiamah, SDinkor, where they thought there would have been little hope, the patient was denied acceptance because medical practitioners at the clinic observed serious symptoms of the Ebola virus disease. The Ailing EPS Agent was later taken back to his residence in the Tulsa Field Community Gardinersville, outside Monrovia where he finally died.

When Presidential Spokesman Jerolinmek Piah was contacted via mobile phone Wednesday afternoon, he declined to comment on grounds that he only speaks for the president’s office and not the Executive Protection Service. When the Director of the EPS, Col. Frank O. Nyekan was finally contacted via mobile phone, he told this paper that he was in a meeting and could not speak to the issue.

However, it is unclear as to whether the Late Agent Ballah O. Dennis closely and personally interacted with President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in recent times prior to death as a member of the Presidential motorcade.

This is probably one of the greatest risk areas to it getting out of Africa, once it gets a foothold in the upper classes those same people will be trying like hell to bug out to western medicine...
