I grew up in NY, too, so it must have been regional marketing. Both versions of the ad were shown, one with the black girl and one with the white. The black girl version appears to have gone into the PC revisionist memory hole.

The one I was referring to definitely was in the 90s. And it didn't seem offensive at all. It showed a cool looking black family having a dinner party. The little girl was adorable with a very cute southern accent.
