Double murder's botched execution prompts Arizona gov to order review

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer ordered a review of the state's execution process after a convicted double murderer gasped and snorted for more than an hour and a half before his death Wednesday.

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne's office said Joseph Rudolph Wood was pronounced dead at 3:49 p.m. local time, one hour and 57 minutes after the execution started.

Wood's lawyers had filed an emergency appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court while the execution was underway, demanding that it be stopped. The appeal said Wood was "gasping and snorting for more than an hour."

In ordering the review, Brewer said she was concerned by the length of time the administered drug protocol took to kill Wood.

"One thing is certain, however," Brewer's statement continued, "Wood died in a lawful manner and by eyewitness and medical accounts he did not suffer. This is in stark comparison to the gruesome, vicious suffering that he inflicted on his two victims - and the lifetime of suffering he has caused their family."

Family members of Wood's victims said they had no problems with the way the execution was carried out.

It wasn't botched. He still got 25 years of more life than his victims and he is dead now. Not botched at all.

Agreed. Life in a cage. Not much else worse, in my opinion.

I agree that firing squads are cheap and quick, satisfying the anti death penalty crowd, maybe. And they are very satisfying.

There’s nothing wrong with a rope.

That is the best way, not much can go wrong plus it is not a dignified way to go; it should not be. I would not be against the executions being public again either. That would be a good lesson for would-be thugs.

Hanging or fire squad would end it for him in a second or two. But you’d still hear the howls coming from the murderous Left.

The method doesn’t bother them, the fact that one of their own is getting removed from this earth is.

A .308 to the skull gets the job done for less than $0.05. We need to bring back firing squads, IMO.

I'm with you on that. A concrete courtyard with a drain and a hose. Quick and easy, no muss, no fuss. Even if the condemned don't deserve it, humane in that it is relatively quick and painless. We don't need to sink to their level, but we do need to ensure a 0.00% recidivism rate. ;-)

I reload my .308. Most folks don’t pick up their brass at the range, and if I see someone shooting .308 or 7.5 Swiss, I ask them if I can collect their brass. Most don’t care.

The Saudis have it right....they guarantee that there'll be no more than 2 seconds of snorting or coughing.

He didn’t “suffer” nearly enough.

I think they should have just thrown him into the Crips or the MS-13 side of the lock up and let nature take it’s course.

We put a horse down recently. The vet uses phenobarbital.
It took awhile for the horse to quit gasping for breath, but he was out of it the whole time. Vet just injected more drug. A .22 bullet to the skull is a lot quicker on a horse, but people don’t like to do it. My son had to shoot one of my mares once when we couldn’t get a vet. Quick and painless.

The problem is that it’s a lie designed to push the ignorant into the anti death penalty column.

The “execution” doesn’t start until the fatal drugs start flowing. What apparantly made this execution “botched” is that the preliminary sedatives put the guy to sleep and he started snoring. Which is when the clock started running.

But what really matters is how long it took him to die from the point he recieved the lethal drug(s), which was a lot less than an hour fifty seven.

Still not sure there is such a thing as a “botched” execution. Only way I can see it being botched if if the scumbag survives it.

Some people would beotch if hung with a new rope,. so your solution would nix that complaint. You also do not have to probe for a vein!
My understanding of legitimate hangings the rope was most times coated with an application of lard or grease to make it work more efficiently.

Forget the Rube Goldberg drug cocktail dispensers and just build a guillotine or something.

To me, a ‘botched execution’ is about 9,234,892 on my list of things to get worked up about.
