New York is America's most unhappy region, a new study has found - while Richmond tops the table as American's most contented place. The study from the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research relies on a large survey that asks respondents about their satisfaction with life. Researchers say that despite this, areas such as New York still attract people because of its job prospects.

I haven’t been out to the Richmond area in about 15 years - but given my impressions about the area back then, I do agree with your sentiments.
That area and a 40-50 mile radius has been a great area to live in, raise a family, and retire in.
The two corporations I worked for had reps who spent their careers and retired in that area.
It is one of the few areas where Bay area people, we know have stayed there after relocation.

Just don’t do more than 20 mph over the speed limit. It’s reckless driving in VA, and you can go to jail.
