Why The Russians Are Panicking Over Flight 17
The Federalist ^ | July 21, 2014 | Tom Nichols

The one emotion most of us who study Russia never associate with the men of the Kremlin is panic. They’re not the type. They’re more like mobsters, prone to say “we have a problem” rather than to freak out. They think everything has a solution, although sometimes that solution might mean someone has to take nine grams of lead behind the ear. They do not raise their voices—my experience is that most Russian tough-guys are mumblers, not yellers—and they get things done, even if the final outcome might lack a certain, say, elegance.

That’s why it’s unusual to see the government of Vladimir Putin, and maybe even Putin himself, panicking over the downing of Malaysian Airline Flight 17. For the first time in a long time, maybe even since Putin’s first election to power, the Russian regime has a problem it cannot solve, one that will cost the Kremlin in both money and reputation.

A quick question on your moral equivalency:

If a bank robber accidentally kills a teller, while shooting at the police, is that the same thing as a policeman who accidentally shoots a teller, while shooting at a bank robber?

I tend to think the underlying motivations matter, and I blame the bank robber for the teller's death in both scenarios.

“... we’re just fortunate that nothing has happened (yet).”

Fortunate beyond belief.

No gambler in the history of the world has ever had this kind of good fortune. With this country’s lackadaisical leadership, our open borders, and an organized criminal element importing Lord knows what, I’m surprised Washington hasn’t been replaced with a mushroom cloud.

I’m guessing that right now, in the U.S., there are manpads hidden in closets and garages. Mohammed and Azim are just waiting for the “word” to pull these toys out. Airplanes will then begin falling out of the sky

So, we’re just supposed to ignore the intercepted phonecall from the intel commander to his deputy, right?

How about releasing the transcripts from air traffic control tower which were seized by Ukraine Secuity Services and the USA satellite photos of the conflict zone from July 18th?

IOW stop pussyfooting around with the easily disputed social media stuff and produce some real evidence for a change.

Where is the poster substantially wrong? Educate me here.

Bandar Abbas, not Tehran to Dubai. Two missiles, not one. The Airbus was climbing out, on a vector toward the ship from land, while the ship was in Iranian waters chasing gunboats. That would logically indicate to me that the plane was in Iranian airspace.

The US agreed to pay 61.8 million to the victims and about 70 million more (for the plane?).

The shoot-down was a horrible mistake, an action undertaken in circumstances that are pretty hard to defend based on the data.

Nice try. All the blame belongs to the Russians and their sock puppets.
THEY fired a missile that killed nearly 300 people. The rest of us have a expectation that Barbarians won’t attack innocent civilians.

“We have no moral authority to condemn Russia for anything.”

Complete nonsense - or worse.

No such video - I challenge you to provide a link.

“Complete nonsense - or worse.”

We are arming the most evil people on the planet (Muslim Brotherhood, Libya, ISIS) who kill more civilians intentionally (especially Christian women and children) each month than were on that plane.

Here’s the thing - even if I agree with you re. ISIS etc., that sad fact does not render us deaf dumb and blind.
