For my English 121 class I have to do a research/argumentative paper.
I don't want it to necessarily be about something like guns or abortion. I want something a little creative. It has to be something I can research. Something I feel passionate about (I know you all don't know what I'm passionate about, but I am passionate about conservatism). It doesn't have to be politically related/controversial, but those are the terms I generally think in. It can be something from the past or present. Also, I have to give the opposition's side.
Any serious/creative ideas, please post.
BTW, shockers of all shockers, my teacher is liberal. I don't think he will grade me harshly, though, for coming down on a conservative side of an issue. I think he will be fair.

In the 1960’s when even the Democrats would have been considered conservatives by today’s standards it was patriotic to question authority. But today, when even Republicans are liberals by 1960’s standards, it is treasonous to question authority. Recently released film footage shows that the National Guard did indeed hear shots fired so it’s possible and probable that the Kent State Shooting was provoked by the protestors. In many protests the left provoked an assault to get the proper optics of The Man beating up on them so they could gain public sympathy.
Today there are 70,000 SWAT team members. Those same provocative liberals are running the government. “We need a civilian force just as well armed and just as well trained as the Army.” (Obama) Are those same liberals intending to provoke a response from conservatives to provide the reason to use that massive force?

Since you live in Colorado, I would think the age old question of damming the Platte would be a great topic. Water policy in general. Or the current view in the forestry department that you ought to let forest fires burn instead of fighting them.

Coming in late on this, but I agree with those who’ve said you’re more likely to get a good grade if you do something different from the rest of the class. My son had a similar assignment last year, and he got an A on a paper/presentation about the electric distribution system.
It was a current, “controversial” topic, due to recent major storms; it had plenty of facts available to show research ability; and it didn’t punch anyone’s Freakout Buttons.

Also, every food produced by agriculture is GMO. No exceptions. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors invented the practice of modifying plants and animals to make them better food sources. Ever since, we’ve been refining the techniques. Anyone who wants non-GMO food is going to have to take up hunting and foraging, because out in the wild is where that kind of food exists.

I’d suggest elementary education reform. It’s current, it’s controversial, there’s a lot of stuff out there, you can probably find statistics, etc. without too much trouble. And I’d think you could find real people on all sides to talk with you.
You’ve got charter schools, voucher programs, home schooling, parochial schooling and of course traditional public schools.
That’s a good idea too.
The most dangerous policy to America today is the liberal view that the Constitution is a living document. This is in total contrast to all research into an historical document which in every English Composition Handbook expressly states that historical context must be taken into consideration to legitimize any critique of the document.
If my sentence is not gramatically correct or illogical, I have low blood sugar and haven’t had anything to eat yet so I have a headache, my face is burning, and I could very well be loopy at this point.
LOL - well, perhaps your reluctance to write on this topic may also be further proof of how literature has made the promotion of virtue into a vice!
