DuVall was outstanding in Open Range, as was Costner.
Don’t we need more western movies?
I think Donald and Keifer Sutherland are working on one.
I’ve become fond of watching Scott’s flicks on Encore’s western channel. He always played the same good-guy character, but I never had a chance to watch many of his flicks due to extreme poverty in my youth. (snicker)
This thread is a bit ironic if you consider that ‘The Duke’ shot his epic failure of a movie, The Conqueror (’56), in the wake of a ‘53 nuclear test called ‘Dirty Harry’, that’s alleged to have rained fallout on the location siting the cast & crew of the film.
The rest of it is speculation, but, for this thread, I still say ‘ironic’...

And yes...no contest.
I’m scratching my head over where I ever said that the Duke played “bad guys.” I didn’t. I said he played anti-heroes which is not the same thing, lol! Anti-heroes are wonderfully flawed characters. His worst character, in my opinion, is in Red River where he attempts to lynch members of his own cattle drive. Thank God for Montgomery Clift who steps up to the plate, American-style.
Did you know that the Duke & Howard Hawks wanted Clift for the Dean Martin role in Rio Bravo? Clift turned them down because he didn’t like working with the Duke and Walter Brennan. While I think Martin is excellent, I would have been interested to see Clift in the role.
John Wayne for sure.
Clift was good on the screen. Don’t know a lot about him, but I think Liz Taylor was attracted, Guess he was ago.
Seemed to die early. I was a kid and din’t go to many of his movies. My mom went.

My wife summed up the difference between the two very well. When asked whom she preferred, she said that she liked John Wayne movies better because you could always tell who the good guys were.
I remember seeing The High and The Mighty at the theater as a kid. When it became available on DVD, I had to buy it. I also liked him in Donovan’s Reef and Hatari!
People concentrate too much on poor Clift’s “sexuality.” Bore, bore, bore as Katherine Hepburn would say. He, too, was a great film star although very different from the two people we’re talking about here. He was a very great film actor. Just watched his performance in “From Here to Eternity.” He was an acting genius, actually.
I’ve caught interviews were other stars of the period mention him with respect.
Clift is an adult taste. I didn’t get him as a kid although, like you, my mother did. Once I DID get him there was no looking back.
I heartily disagree, all you have to do is watch The Quiet Man, Donovan's Reef or Hatari to see that isn't true. I would not put one above the other, Wayne and Eastwood have great similarities and also very different strengths. But in the end they are completely equal as patriots.
Many people love his performance in The Quiet Man to the exclusion of other movies. I can see why: he’s amazing as is Miss O’Hara. She’s so mean to him!
I very much like his war films, too. And an airplane adventure called “Island in the Sky” when he and others crash land in the middle of an unknown section of Canada, I believe. Amazing supporting cast, as well.
He produced most of them, invested wisely and ended up one of the wealthiest actors in Hollywood, correcting for inflation he was probably worth around $1 Billion bucks.
Pretty smart all the way around.
Compare this John Wayne, who did pretty well, but almost went bankrupt producing and financing “The Alamo” in 1960.
Always loved Joel McCrea. Especially in Sullivan’s Travels.
John Wayne.
Just saw Eastwood’s latest movie. “Jersey Boys” is entertaining, if not profound.
At 84 he is still productive and sharp.
Most are resting on their laurels at 84.
People have forgotten or don’t know that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were the first truly international Hollywood celebrities. They played arenas and were mobbed on every continent they visited. They’re buried at a small high desert cemetery, Sunset Hills Memorial Park, in Apple Valley, CA.
