Okay, this is how you get the best of everything:
Look up “GeoFatboy” on Youtube. He fronts for an online shaving site called “Shave Nation,” and has an extensive video collection of various razors, creams, and techniques. By far the best, but “Sharpology” is no slouch, either.
Next, get you a Feather “Artisans Club” Straight Razor. They take a proprietary (though not too expensive) disposable blade that is generally acknowledged to be SHARPER, and thus less irritating, than any regular straight razor.
Feather is a Japanese blade maker that also makes surgical scalpels.
These blades go into the heavy straight razor (somewhat like a shavette) like the old gillette injectors, so you never have to touch the blade.
No stroping. No sending them off to be reground, and best of all, no screwing them up till you learn to sharpen them correctly.
This is the ONLY regime that I’ve found to satisfy my little girl (Ow daddy, your whispers (sic) HURT!) who would complain immediately AFTER I shaved with the Multi-Ginsu disposables.
OK... he’s not offering you the best of *everything*... (some people came late to the thread)
There ain't no such thing this side of obsidian. If that razor ain't sharp, it's because it wasn't sharpened properly. My hunting knife is sharper than most folks' razors. It seems it is a dying art. Just sayin.
