I suspect that most who called for all the federal aid to “education” had no idea what they were initially proposing c. 1958-1966.

Student loans helped distort demand and supply by dumping more dollars/students into the pipe. As a result, tuition prices have been rocketing upward ever since, with nothing to hold them in check; the demand side being infinite due to government loans.
