According to what I read, this thing went to great depths before they found it, so that would imply a giant squid or something like that.

According to another article, the tracking device was tracked to a depth greater than the sharks ability to reach and then showed up on the beach.

Funny how so many missed the part of the story where they download tracking information that pretty well indicated that the shark was attacked by something.
