The United States apparently made it to something like 1870 without public schools.... there were Catholic schools and it made the protestants nervous enough to DEMAND public schools....see how well that worked out.

Don't be ignorant. Free public education was written into the national law with the Ordinance of 1787. The Founding Fathers understood that an educated polity was essential for the survival of republican government.
