Did you pick up on the comment from your link that the Dad was worried if his son had become saved? In other words his son had no religious conviction at all before going.... which is interesting because my husband believes he converted which is the reason they didn’t kill him.

I’m also pretty sure the “disillusioned” little jerk either converted or pretended very well-if he hadn’t, he’d be missing his head. If MrT5 were here, he’d be saying the deserter needed to go directly to a court(s)martial, do not pass go, etc.
