Sheriff Wants Your Prayers; Target of Warrant Could Be Charged For Injuries to Toddler

CNN has updates on the story of the Georgia SWAT team that threw a flash bang while executing a no-knock warrant that severely burned a nineteen-month-old baby. Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell says the deputies involved are "devastated" and that they've been called "baby killers" and received threats. "All I can say is pray for the baby, his family and for us," the sheriff told CNN.

Terrell has insisted his officers and those of the local police department did nothing wrong and blamed the target of the warrant (not found at the house that was invaded) on the attack on the toddler. A chief assistant district attorney for the county, J. Edward Staples, says the target of the warrant could in fact be charged for the injuries the sheriff's deputies caused the toddler. In an obvious attempt to immunize himself and his office from liability, the sheriff has claimed the situation was unavoidable even as he attempted to offer reassurances that his SWAT team would be more diligent in the future. He told CNN that his officers "obviously would have done things different" (IF they knew there was a child in the home), like go in through a side door or not use a flash bang.

How about next time have two deputies arrest him outside the door of the home THEN SERVE YOUR WARRANT! Stop waking people up in the middle of the night with Gestapo type raid tactics. Worse this raid was based on the word of a paid informant? Where's the police work Barney? The more militarized our law enforcement agencies including local sheriffs offices the more near deadly or deadly MISTAKES are being made on the part of LEO's. Most crimes including drug crimes do not merit a militarized raid on a home Especially When Family Innocents Are Present. If the sheriff doesn't understand this then the sheriff needs to step down and get out of law enforcement all together.

Their SWAT Team raided a home at night and tossed a grenade in the crib where a baby slept. They violated one of the first and foremost firearm usage rules of be sure of your target. BTW why did they need to use this "Tool" LEO's like to call things now to start with? I pray that our law enforcement be stripped of the authority and means to conduct such raids in the future except in cases where it is a known hostage situation which this wasn't.

Man up. Take responsibility. Disband the Ninja Militarized SWAT Teams and put patrol uniform clothes back on law enforcement officers.

Let me see if I have this correct:

CI’s never lie

Could not gain access before throwing the flash bag, but was able to gain access afterward.

Cops are never to blame for being stupid

Everyone went home safe EXCEPT the innocent baby

Yea that really really make sense.

No evidence? After the informant IDed the place, they had an undercover officer make a meth buy there. Did you fail to see that part of the story? I am not surprised. If the media thought they could leave it out, they would. Instead, it is buried.

“They’re going to charge the OCCUPANT for the injuries caused by the grenade tossed by HIS officers?

Absolutely ridiculous and outrageous.”

Nope. They plan to charge the guy they were going after and he wasn’t even at the scene. This is “We gotta cover our asses bug time.”

This sherrif should be run out of town on a rail.

Confidential informant gave info. Undercover cop then visited and bought meth. When they got the warrant, the perp and his guards were not home, but the “mom” was.

I have no issues with arresting him as long as it is either when reasonable people would be awake or done outside the home. Put on a Patrol, Uniform and Knock on the darn door like a professional civilized person. This business that gathering evidence is far more important than safety {thus the reason for these type of raids to start with} is what has brought us all to this point. That's why SWAT Teams like night raids. They should not be bashing down peoples doors period. Give a reasonable person time to respond in a civilized manner.

I'm hard of hearing myself. If someone bashes in my door when I'm asleep I will assume the worse and act accordingly to defend family and self. I'm a day sleeper BTW. I also have taken measures to make certain no one can do this to me without me having advanced notice of their presence.

So many over at piss1 see no sense of accountability at all. Just talked with a guy who has family as cops. They just don’t get it. Because it isn’t them. Cops are children.

After the informant IDed the place, they had an undercover officer make a meth buy there.

I stand corrected. The facts remain that mother and child were guests in the home - and that blindly tossing in an explosive device because meth had previously been sold there is grossly disproportionate.

All of their weapons and material must be destroyed and sold for scrap.

Wrong....give it all to the citizen militia. Start giving it to those whom have CCW licenses and DONT vote for liberals.

Such people claim they were “just doing their job”, and when that is the excuse for unnecessary death or injury, then you know that this is a corrupt system that must be changed at a much higher level.

Why, for example, is it a routine matter to conduct such a militarized police action when far more peaceful means are available? I hear many excuses, but where the tables changed, say in a dispute between neighbors, what would the courts rule and how easily would the police move to charge one of the parties with a crime?

Government has moved from serving citizens to trying to coerce them into obeying via displays of its power. I would sympathize more with the officers involved if they had tried peaceful interaction first. Too often the polic are too busy for that option and besides they have all these guns and flash-bangs and other toys of force and violence, which they deploy against people who are not shown to be violent.

I want to know what the warrant was for?

A confidential informant claimed that the target was involved in a drug deal. I don't know if the claim was for buying or selling, but what does it matter to the child the cops nearly killed.

Yes. Selling meth deserves a blown up baby.

Riddle me this. When the perp sold the undercover officer meth, why wasn’t he arrested then, you know, when they were sure he was at home?

The same team killed an innocent pastor in 2009. There are threads here on FR.

Seriously...? You want to hand weapons of war (we’re talking about tanks and sub machine guns here) to people based on their political leanings? Yeah, that will end well.
