Ryan Hunter-Reay has captured the 98th Indianapolis 500 in a dramatic finish, holding off a final charge from Helio Castroneves after making a gutsy, outside pass into Turn 1 on the final lap for the lead.
Hunter-Reay held off Castroneves by just 0.0600 of a second, the second-closest finish in ’500 history (1992). The win is the first for Andretti Autosport since 2007 (Dario Franchitti) and the team’s third overall.

Dang right! Busch impressed me. Like ‘em or hate ‘em, those Busch boys are some driving fools. Congratulations to Kurt.

Congrats to the winner but I gotta say Helio is a great name for a race car driver.
I don’t like the Busch brothers either, but they cazn drive.
Ole Helio should have waited to pass RHR until last lap, turn 3. Then RHR would not have time to recover and re-pass before the finish line.
Common mistake made by most but the most cerebral drivers.
Sato made the same type mistake a couple years ago (I think) trying to pass in turn 1 of last lap on Dario and ended up wrecking. Patience is a virtue and damn near non-existent in race drivers.
Good finish, glad it didn’t end under a yellow flag. Would have been even better if I could have seen the last few laps without the actual race shrunken down so we could see reaction shots of the wives and girlfriends - absolutely ridiculous how the climax of the race is trivialized for the “how did you feel” moments with the wives. I suppose I should be grateful they bothered to show the race at all while they zeroed in on the all-important shots of Beccy Hunter-Reay clasping her hands and cheering.

It was amazing that the race went for 149 laps from the very start without a yellow. That has to be a record.
Unfortunately they made up for it in the last fifty-one laps.
Bet he’d have done even better if he hadn’t wrecked the #1 car...Still awesome, IMHO

Great last three laps. incredible driving. Glad it wasn’t a NASCAR race, one of those guys would have been slammed into the wall by the others team mate who was ten laps down
I remember when the Indy 500 was one of the premier events in sports; ABC aired it on tape delay so it could be seen in prime time. Anyone with a bit of interest in the race avoided radio and TV news reports before the telecast, so they wouldn’t know who won before the evening broadcast.
Four decades later, the featured prime time race is a NASCAR event, the Coca-Cola 600. And many of the story lines from the Indy 500 focused on Kurt Busch, who is becoming the latest NASCAR drive to participate in both races on the same day.
The decline of Indy car racing—and the rise of NASCAR—is one of the great stories in American sports over the past 40 years. Plenty of experts never gave NASCAR a chance until they discovered that it had become a national sport, completely eclipsing the Indy series.
It is a record, at least for races since 1976 (when they began keeping track of caution periods during the race).
