if someone wanted to worship Allah, presumably he or she would not be approved to enter the founding community

thank you for your honesty.

I believe Islam is Evil and must be eradicated. Churchill describes the problem with Islam.

But this initiative is no different from the Taliban.

This is not for a discussion on whether Maine can secede of not, it is an invitation for Born again Christians to consider moving to Maine to help us secede.

Maybe if you posted it to the religious forum with some "CAUCUS" label. But if you post it to General/Chat people are going to chat about it generally.

In technical terms, Maine secession would be easier because it's at one far end of the country and only shares a border with one state (it's also just about the only state I have to go east to visit: everything else is the other way, FWIW), but Maine is, with Vermont and New Hampshire one of the least religious states in the country (used to be Oregon, California, and Washington), so your plan is going to be difficult to realize.

Just as isreal is a Jewish nation but does not prohibit other religions,so will Maine be a Christian nation but will not prohibit other religions, with the exception of Islam.

Then don't you have to rewrite you Section 3 to specify that Islam is prohibited?

Thanks 4Z.

So the secessionists are clearly conspiring to break the law and deprive citizens of their civil rights.

There's the "tell". The spirit of this movement is exposed by its desire to invite in those from away.

God bless and protect the true Yankee spirit and nature of Maine.

Maine? Really???

From the Bangor Daily News 5/18/12:

Got faith? Maine the least-religious state in the nation

Maine has fewer residents who claim a religious affiliation than any other state in the union. The Pine Tree State is the only one in the country in which less than 30 percent of the population belong to a religious denomination or independent Christian church, according to a census conducted every 10 years by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies.

This follows a Pew study that found 40 percent of Mainers pray daily — the lowest percentage in the nation.

And from the Portland Press Herald on 9/5/11:

Maine a mecca for gay couples

Experts attribute the numbers to the state’s gay-friendly laws and its history of tolerance.

Maine has more same-sex couples per capita than all but six states, according to a new analysis of 2010 U.S. Census data.

Additionally, South Portland and Portland have become particular hot spots for gay couples, the statistics show, outpacing Boston, Cambridge and other gay-friendly cities.

So Maine is the state in which born again Christians will comfortable moving to? And all the current born again Christians and future born again Christian residents will be sufficient in number to exceed the current residents who will surely vote against this ill-conceived constitution?

You are delusional.

Oops -- I ate lunch before cutting the lawn and couldn't resist looking at the thread again!

You are 180 degrees incorrect in saying this initiative is no different from the Taliban. Here are the key differences:

1. Islam reduces women to social and legal status of chattel; not even fully human; they may be raped as strangers, as wives or even as children, falsely accused under the full force of law, punished when victimized, and may be placed into a harem.

Christ lifted women up to full equality in the eyes of God, and exhorted men to love their wives as He loved the Church, even to the point of death for her sake; he prescribed one wife for one husband. He especially directed that children be encouraged, and spared from abuse.

2. Islam demands adherence on pain of death. No one may leave Islam. Islam may capture and force adherence, and it practices slavery to this day. Outward displays of its rituals are emphasized. Arrogance and pride are the hallmarks of the muslim.

Christ invites those who are humbled, and whose hearts are convinced of their need for salvation and who truly want Him as their savior. Those who do not come of their own free will are not much use to Him. He also directed that our devotion should not be a matter of ostentation in pubic, but of sincerity in the privacy of our hearts.

3. Islam directs its followers to scorn or persecute those of other faiths, to oppress them politically and even to kill them. It approves of the concept of lying to the "infidel." As such, it makes the rule of law in a free society impossible.

Christ demands fidelity to Truth, to extend love and prayers to our neighbors and hospitality to the stranger, and even to pray for our enemies, at the same time reserving the right to defend our persons and families by legal means.

OK, now I'm really going to cut the lawn.

Really.

To answer one question: June 12, 2018 would be the date of our primary in 2018. They presumably are shooting for that date as primaries are lower turnouts than November elections.

I am in Maine and this is the first I have heard of this utterly crazy idea. It will not succeed for several reasons.

Islam is Evil and needs to be eradicated.

That said, This "republic" of maine would institute similar proscriptions on behavior, based on your religious beliefs. It is a distinction without a difference. Just a different god setting different religious rules.

Seriously, what is the difference between "No business open on Sunday" and "Every woman must wear a burka" You set rules based on your religious beliefs. There is no freedom. The US constitution provides for liberty and freedom. We need to get back to those values.

You are proposing an economy destroying Constitution. Yup, everyone’s going to vote for that.

Tourism in Maine? You just killed it. Hotel/Motel/Inn keepers can’t work, so no one can be checked in or checked out on Sundays. Maids certainly can’t clean rooms on Sundays.

But it won’t matter because taxi drivers can’t work on Sundays, buses won’t run on Sundays. Neither will trains or airplanes.

All airports will be closed on Sundays without workers.

As far as driving anywhere, better fill up on Saturday because you won’t find gas stations open on Sunday.

Commercial fishing? Can’t do it Sundays.

Commercial shipping? According to Wikipedia: “In 2001, Maine’s largest city of Portland surpassed Boston as New England’s busiest port (by tonnage), due to its ability to handle large tankers.” I wonder how that will work to close the ports on Sundays.

Actually, just the fact that you’re going close down stores and malls on Sundays will doom this half-witted idea.

Remember the Free State Project?

Vermont has its own secessionist group.

Once these groups get all *political*....they lose their way, IMHO.

Not to mention farming, which is a seven day a week occupation. Especially if you have farm animals.

“Especially if you have farm animals.”

We’ll need some of those for sacrifices at the State House. Say, 10% of each species. We’ll call it tithing and you can write it off your taxes.

"God bless and protect the true Yankee spirit and nature of Maine. "

Thank you, if it be the will of Christ for Maine to be a free Christian nation, nothing can prevent it, if it not be His will, nothing can cause it to happen.

No one ever said it would be easy, but, look at the rest of the country, is there a better state, is ther a better Constitution, to take out of the union than Maine? I think not. It is in God's hands.
