One of the only movies I've ever seen that has a perfect ending.
Sidenote: The part where "Marriage of Figaro" is played over the prison loudspeakers turned me onto opera in a major way.

One of my favorite movies. I watch it whenever it's on.

That movie is on AMC so much that my wife and I
refer to AMC as "The Shawshank Channel".

I got nothing from this movie, and left before it was done.
I’ve met many people who rave about this film. It bored me to sleep. Not every film, even a well made film, is going to please everybody. I also walked out on Avatar.
With Shawshank; one thing that threw me off from the suspension of disbelief is that Morgan Freeman was in it. Even back then, some what? 12 years ago, Morgan Freeman was the default actor when you needed, the type. I was already seeing too much of him. Driving Ms Daisy ,etc.Tim Robbins on screen personality was always a bit nebulous, never gripping to me. This may have worked for me with different actors.

Shawshank is one of those films whenever I'm channel-surfing and I come across it, I watch it to the end.

Bob Gunton is a character actor with 125 credits to his name, including several seasons of "24" and "Desperate Housewives" and a host of movie roles in films such as the Oscar-winning "Argo." Vaguely familiar faces like his are common in the Los Angeles area where he lives, and nobody pays much attention. Many of his roles have been forgotten. But every day, the 68-year-old actor says, he hears the whispersfrom cabdrivers, waiters, the new bag boy at his neighborhood supermarket: "That's the warden in 'Shawshank.' "
FWIW on this Memorial Day weekend, Gunton is also an Army veteran who received a Bronze Star for valor in Vietnam.
