Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 21, 2014-- toponym
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
toponym [top-uh-nim]
noun
1. a place name.
2. a name derived from the name of a place.
Origin: 189095; top- + -onym, or by back formation from toponomy
From Wordsmith.org:
Once upon a time, a person's name was his complete identification and address. It could comprise his given name, profession, father or mother's name, a personal trait, and even the name of his village. That was because where one lived defined a person as much as anything else. The place of origin often turned into a generic term for some personal characteristic.
The English language is replete with such expressions where the name of a place has become associated with a particular quality, such as laconic (using few words) from Laconia in ancient Greece or bohemian (unconventional) from Bohemia in the Czech Republic. There are hundreds of toponyms -- words derived from the names of places.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Students are invited to use an example of a toponym instead of the word toponym itself, if you prefer.
thought it was, but that’s obv not what comes into my mind with the # 3!
However, I'm Scots by birth, and dinna ken ya leath of the Irish...

Oval.
Carlin did a bit about a bunch of rednecks driving around in a circle. I was alluding to that.
“Where else are you going to see a 50-car pileup and not be in the #$@% thing?”
I’m American by birth, and Polish / western Slavic by heritage
(My wife is a polyglot with a rich ancestry including much UK-ranian of a different sort, and of course Polish only by injection ;)
I was just being a pedant. ;)
I know, and you did it well. :-)
DC has generated toponyms
Some are common in speech-
Even the word “Washington”
Makes me want to screech
DC style suggests to me
A bribe under the table-
A way to pay someone else
To buy you a phony label
Or perhaps it just describes
The lifestyle of those few
Who enjoy all the fancy stuff
With money they steal from you...

Waterloo is an excellent example.

NY Minute conveys the rush that is the city.

I wonder if Blarney Frank is named after that stone.

Good poem. “Washington” has gone from the name of our country’s first leader to the name of a hellhole of waste of corruption.
Thank you! So true-if I saw an ad for a Washington-style anything, I wouldn’t be in any hurry to try or buy it-it suggests something over-rated, and deceptive marketing...
i stopped at the Safeway on the way home and was loading my groceries onto the conveyor when a youngish black man came behind me and said, Ma’am i am not asking for cash, but could you put some $ on here so i can get some food [it was a safeway gift card he wanted me to put $ on]. I of course said, no i am sorry i cannot. And when i got up there told the checker about it and the woman behind me said he had asked her as well. The checker called the mgr who was already dealing with the issue. The checker said that they have had the police out bc there have been problems with solicitation in the parking lot, and i have witnessed that my self. Ps me O to NO END. this is one of THE richest counties in the country, there are JOBS here [checker said safeway is HIRING— for heaven’s sake] and the “safety net” is quite sound. These are scam artists, or mentally disturbed and it is just ridiculous. Had i been thinking i would have said i will give you this container of hummus after i am done paying!
My son was in the local mall and approached by a young woman asking for money for bus fare. We both said no.
Coming back from SU, xshub and I stopped at rest area just south of b’hamton on 81, to switch drivers. A guy was asking for $ saying they ran out of gas.
So, let the hummusment fit the crime?
Was it the roasted red pepper hummus? They eat that here with pita chips.
