Michael Sam is too small and too slow for the NFL. The Rams can't play him aggressively or risk him getting clobbered.
Other NFLers are either waiting for a chance at payback for politicizing the game or are worried if they hit him too hard, they could be accused of some anti-homo crime.
If St. Louis cuts him, they can expect White House scrutiny or worse.
Sam brings more issues and distractions than any player in recent history...
“Michael Sam is too small and too slow for the NFL. The Rams can’t play him aggressively or risk him getting clobbered.”
You obviously haven’t taken into account the anti-bullying rules the NFL will implement to protect Sams. I suppose they’ll have to make him wear a pink pullover jersey too.
Sam will wind up on the Rams developmental roster...practice player, won’t see any action in games beyond the pre-season. After a couple of seasons on the taxi squad, the Rams will offer him in a trade, and there will be no takers. Shortly thereafter, Sam will announce his retirement from the NFL, followed by Roger Goodell appointing him as the league’s special assistant for LGBT matters—that is, if ESPN doesn’t sign him to a six-figure deal as a commentator.
On a personal level, Sam came out for the right reasons, but I get the impression that his announcement was more about enhancing his standing in the draft—basically forcing an NFL team to draft him—than about being truthful to himself. Sam is a smart guy, and he knew exactly how the media would react. I’ll be greatly surprised if he ever sees the field in a regular season game, but he will go down as the most famous “marginal” player in NFL history, simply because of his sexual orientation.
