That's because the image is artificial, deliberately created to show how it would look if there were no clouds.
What I'm asserting is that the posted image either was taken at a different time or is also artificial. Because there is no doubt that it was night-time on the west coast at the stated time.
The Fourmilab site is very neat. You can give it a position in outer space, and it will compute how the earth would look from that perspective. It also has orbit data for a large variety of satellites out there. You can pick one and ask how the earth looked from that satellite at a particular point in time.
E.g., if you've been watching CNN lately, you might want to pick the view from Inmarsat 3-F1, 35810 km above the Indian Ocean on 8 March 00:11 UTC ...
Something quite interesting was happening to 239 people in that pond below, and data from Inmarsat 3-F1 has caused a lot of activity in the lower right part of the image lately.
