My mom’s ex-husband drank 24 beers a day. We were sure that it’d kill him (we’ve never had an alcoholic in the family). But nope. He’s in his mid-80’s now and doing just fine. Still chugging 24 beers a day.
I think one’s genes has a lot to do with these outcomes. I knew a long-term, serious alcoholic (I’m talking Manhattans at 10:00am) who lived to 89. I had a great-aunt who smoked two packs a day since a teenager, who lived to 92. And I knew a total abstainer — never smoked, never drank — who was an accomplished athlete. He died in his fifties.
I certainly believe you should take care of your body as best you know how but, in the end, it’s mostly about the genes.
