Willie Nelson about to become fifth degree black belt Posted on April 16, 2014 | By Craig Hlavaty
Country legend and Texas icon Willie Nelson could kick your butt in a fight. No, not with his trusty guitar Trigger or throwing stars strategically hidden under his cowboy hat.
Nelson is due to receive his fifth degree black belt in the art of Gong Kwon Yu Sul, a modern Korean martial arts system, on April 28 at a martial arts studio in Austin, according to his publicist, Elaine Shock.
The following day, the troubadour will turn 81, which should make us all feel incredibly lazy.
Shock said that for the past 20 years Nelson has been training in the art of Tae Kwon Do and Gong Kwon Yu Sul, often practicing while in his bus on his seemingly never-ending tour with his family of musicians.
His teacher at Master Martial Arts, the Korean-born Grand Master Sam Um, also directed Nelson in the 2007 film Fighting With Anger.

Yawn!
The guy is about to turn 81, give him credit.
He’s cracked too many bricks with his forehead.
Wow...started training at age 61, fifth degree black belt at 81. Color me impressed.
He started right when the IR became more involved in his life.
I've got a dog about to turn 14 years old.
Maybe he could earn a bachelor's degree from UNH in the time he has left.
He's not very smart; he is a dog after all.
But he smokes a lot less dope than Willie.
I'm actually more impressed with Ed O'Neill receiving a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Rorion Gracie.
He’s doing far more in his golden years than most people.
Finally made it to my brown belt after a number of years taking on and off. (Taekwondo) I say good on ‘im.
Willie is also hosting a fundraiser for the Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Wendy Davis. “Put that in your pipe and smoke it.” Hmmm ... maybe not, seeing what Willie puts in his pipe! Willie has gone downhill since his original album “Texas in My Soul” (one of my all-time favorites).
Yeah, his mind is gone, he’s a lib, but I love his music.
FMCDH(BITS)
One of the proudest days of my life!
Took me five years to receive my first degree (Sho Dan) in Shotokan and another fifteen to reach my fifth degree (Go Dan).
(My sensei became an Olympic judge.)
At 62 years of age .. I have no desire to go higher though. (five more Dans)
Good for Willie!
