The K-9 German Shepherd Portland police searched for much of Wednesday morning was found dead with at least one gunshot wound a little before 10 a.m.
The dog was hurt during an officer-involved shooting just before 3 a.m. near Southwest Capitol Highway and Lobelia Street.
A suspect, armed with a weapons similar to an AR-15 rifle, also wounded an officer, though those injuries are considered to be not life threatening.
Earlier, officers were investigating a burglary at a uniform supply store that sold police equipment, where a vehicle was located with three suspects inside.
Reese said officers saw three people coming from a uniform shop. They fled in an SUV and were chased by police.
The chase ended when the SUV hit a utility pole.
The officer released the K-9 in pursuit and gunfire was exchanged.
The suspect carrying the rifle which was later found on scene fled on foot, Portland Police Bureau Chief Mike Reese said Wednesday.
Three suspects are in custody.
The suspected shooter, whose name has not yet been released, was confronted at gunpoint by officers in the 6900 block of SW Olson Road and then surrendered. That is about three miles from where the shooting took place.
The K-9 officer
The dog was relatively new to the force and was not wearing a ballistic vest, said Reese.
Rather, it was wearing a non-ballistic harness system. The dogs name wont be released until the officers family has been notified.
In Oregon, assaulting a law enforcement animal is a class C felony.
Damn fine police work
Police are still investigating how many shots were fired. Reese said its rare for people to shoot at officers but, there have been two instances in the last month.
Damn fine police work led to the arrest, said Reese.
Little information is available about the suspect.
A community effort
The Bureau of Emergency Communications initiated a reverse 911 call to residents in the neighborhood requesting they stay in their homes and to call 911 if they saw anything suspicious.
Residents who called 911 were critical to helping police find the suspected shooter, Simpson said.
The suspect was taken into custody shortly before 6 a.m. and was taken to a hospital, Simpson said. It is unclear if the suspect was wounded in the gunfight with the officer or if he was wounded while running from police.
Why did the dog leave the handler?
WTF does this mean “weapons similar to an AR-15 rifle” it was dark and scary looking
The officer released the K-9 in pursuit...
The dog was relatively new to the force.
Nevermind.....
Trigger group, barrel, bolt, firing pin. I suppose.
not so sad to hear . .
It means, "This reporter would love to say that the firearm involved was an AR-15, but sadly it wasn't."
I know without a doubt that if the police had found the gun who shot the dog he would be dead
and I would nominate them for medals
Too bad that dog was not wearing a bullet proof vest, I hope someone in Portland donates enough for the rest of the dogs
Class C felony? It was murder
an officer wounded and a K9 killed? you are glad for this??
Now, in hippy treehugger circles a dog is a canary is a monkey is a boy, all are equivalent. Kumbaya.
But in sane circles humans are different and special. Created in the image of God.
You can't advocate for any of that murder crap without the animals are equal to humans crap from which it comes.
The officer wounded is sad.
The dog is of no more import than a police cruiser hitting a tree.
Must have been shopping for no-knock raid outfits. Almost as if thugs these days gotta dress like cops in order to instill fear, panic, and a sense of abject helplessness into their victims. :-\
I take one of those in the upper-right, just in case I find some potential avalanches to shoot down.
not glad, but not sad either...
Never mind the loss of a life, the dog may well have “cost” more than a police car in training, and so on.
There are two basic kinds of people in this world; those who respect life, and those who do not.
“The dogs name wont be released until the officers family has been notified. “
Huh?
Maybe it is one of those new Pumpers, made in the AR-15 style.
Any pictures of the perps?
According to the hippified Antiyuppie, ranchers and farmers must be awful people because they kill animals, and hunters must be the scum of all scum. That thinking is foolishness.
It is not a cause for celebration that some police mutt was shot, but it is not anywhere near “Murder” as another hippy poster pontificated. Dogs are not of the same value as humans
If departments put in even minimal effort into training their mutts to reduce the strength of their bite on a non resisting subject their might conceivably be more sympathy when departments lose a mere animal. But law enforcement doesn't put that training in, and too often the critters zero in on an innocent party.
So in a way you are right. I shouldn't have compared the loss of the mutt to the loss of a police cruiser. I should have compared the loss of the dog to the loss of an unreliable rebuilt police cruiser.
