To: Pearls Before Swine

He was an utterly charming sociopath. He was stealing from the first moment and I had no idea as I was a total business and interpersonal virgin. Ten years later when the judge signed a million dollar award, he tossed it across his desk and said, “Lot’s of luck collecting.” (Florida is a debtor haven state.)

As time went on he took more and more advantage of people leaving ever-more wrecked lives, ex-wives, abandoned children, you name it. I lost track a long time ago. But had I realized such a strong reaction to such a small dose of pot was a screaming symptom, I’d have backed away early and saved myself a lot of grief.

The guy I had in mind wasn’t pot-sensitive, and never needed a major psychiatric intervention. He was a successful psychopath, subtly taking advantage of his partners and putting them at legal risk. Good at maximizing revenues—initially charming to new clients, if sneaky and corner cutting. I’d tell you more (privately), but our settlement binds us from discussing details, if you know what I mean.
