I went through that process a year and a half ago. It was a bit of a hassle because I couldn't find Snow Leopard to order on the Apple Store website. It had gone off support earlier in the year, as I recall. I ended up having to call Apple support.

I’d been looking for a link at Apple Store for Snow Leopard for some time, and was about to call when I found a help page about upgrading to 10.6.8. Lo and behold, there was a tiny little “click here!” link that led to a page where I could order the disc. Once I get the disc installed, I can update further to 10.6.8, and I think most stuff will start working again.
Apparently Apple is still supporting 10.6.8. I am saving the contact info you posted.
