This was a dog allowed to run loose. Its the owner who should be responsible for the death of the child. It was a dog that did what centuries of selective breeding intended it to do: attack something. You just can't dismiss the instincts bred into dogs: pointers and setters point birds, retrievers retrieve, border collies herd animals., etc., etc.

Did you read what I wrote?
The dogs are not at fault so much as people who don’t take care to discipline their dogs and keep them at their side.
Bad dog owners give good dog owners a bad name through their actions.
And I’m sorry when an animal takes a human life. We need to hold dog owners accountable for their animals.

I made the same statement on another thread. I have little experience with pits, but have owned an English Setter. That dog was obsessed with bird hunting. Spend the same effort breading a dog to fight and the results should be obvious.
