I thought ex post facto laws were a big no no also. How long has it been “illegal” to posess these things? Taking it off the rez or a battle field is wrong but who knows how he came by this stuff.

Many states and the Feds, have laws about collecting artifacts and fossils from public lands, and several states have laws against taking anything from Indian burial sites, whether or not on private land.
