I’ve lived abroad as well and one thing about cops is universally true: you don’t want to be around them. Their reason for existing is to act as the muscle of the state. Beating and jailing people is their job. That’s why they carry clubs and handcuffs. Its not a fashion statement.
They are, for the MOST part, dedicated men (and women) who do a job that HAS to be done. They HAVE to deal with the scum of the world and they deserve our support whether we like it or not. Denigrating them serves NO purpose but to make cop-haters feel good about their venting.

Yes, they are the MUSCLE of the state. EVERY state on the planet has them. Without them there would be chaos and every state on the planet knows that--and every state on the planet has PLENTY of police. OURS are some of the more honest AND educated on the planet. If you don't believe me TRY living in a third world sewer country for a little while and see what you think of THEIR police force.
Beating and jailing is PART of their job. So is helping stranded motorists, out-of-gas city drivers, noisy neighbors, lost tourists, drivers who locked their keys in their cars, drivers with flat tires, break and entry thieves, car part thieves, investigators of EVERY kind of crime knows to humanity...and so on. WHY focus on the beating and jailing when they ALSO do as much or more GOOD? They ARE hard, both genders. Their job makes them that way. Would you want NICE, SWEET, SOFT cops? I wouldn't.
Besides, who would keep all the junkies, hookers (both genders), pimps, bums, pickpockets and crazies from panhandling, harassing and annoying the HOLY PIE outta us?
