When adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind was the first billion dollar box-office draw. A blockbuster by any definition, and I can only image the Hollywood accountants must have been dancing with unbridled glee.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (as the film is officially known from Lucasfilm nowadays) is Number 2 all-time box office champion (when adjusted for inflation) for a good reason: it became a film with a lot of repeat viewers back in the days when the only place to see the movie was in the theaters (that's why it was a huge moneymaker for an amazing 15 months in theatrical release!).

We'll never get that today, thanks to modern ways to watch a movie at home (videocassettes since the early 1980's, DVD since 1997 and Blu-ray since 2006, along with legal downloads through iTunes and legal streaming sites like Netflix).

Inflation: Legalized theft by governments from productive, frugal people so that the government may prolong it’s deficit spending in order to buy votes and pay off cronies.
