I was out earlier tonight and heard Mick Jagger over a store loudspeaker singing "Under My Thumb." Given the very tragic suicide of his lover of 13 years, fashion designer and stylist L'Wren Scott, who was buried earlier this week amid rumors that Mick's unfaithfulness was one contributory factor, I hope he never, ever performs that song again...
Just realized MJ could be Mick Jagger just as easily as Michael Jackson, which is actually who I was commenting upon. Sorry for the confusion.
Oh, thanks. Makes sense now.
How do you know it's wrong?

Yes his late girlfriend was a fashion designer but the lyrics in question say:
It's down to me
The difference in the clothes she wears
Down to me, the change has come,
She's under my thumb
I take that as being the girl in question wears the clothes he tells her to wear because shes under his thumb. If the lyrics said the the difference in the clothes she designs you might have more of a point.
Jagger once said, "It's a bit of a jokey number, really. It's not really an anti-feminist song any more than any of the others... Yes, it's a caricature, and it's in reply to a girl who was a very pushy woman".
I always heard the lyrics to that song as a guy who is more fantasizing about getting a girl under his thumb than actually having one under his thumb, and in a rather sad and pathetic way BTW.
That is the thing about songs and song lyrics, we often put into them our own point of view and view and hear them in terms of our own life experiences which sometimes are vastly different from that of the song writer.
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”
For all I know, he held the gun to his head and said, “shoot.” What is wrong is if you meant to to imply that I believe that Mick or anyone else caused this particular suicide of his girlfriend. If that’s not what you meant to imply, well, ok then.
No disputing that. Hoo, boy.
Sanctimonious, self-righteous, voyeuristic, ill-informed.

Of course. But if I, who has followed his career since 1966, could have that kind of visceral reaction to hearing it again, maybe it would be wise for him to avoid the stress of stepping into this particular emotional arena by editing the playlist for the upcoming tour to which he is under contract on pain of forfeiting $10 million if he does not appear.
I was at a Randy Newman concert once, sitting in the front row, when he broke into tears after starting to sing "I Think It's Going to Rain Today." I heard that he had a friend who had recently died. He had to leave the stage for a few moments, during which the audience murmered and grew restless.

True. And that is why controversy often arises when none was intended. So it would be good to steer clear of unintended ghoulishness for the sake of his own peace of mind. He's not a young guy any more. The concert tour will be grueling enough without stirring the pot unnecessarily. Then there is the stress of rehearsing the song with no audience present, but one's best friends are there. And then there is the temptation of his being a recovering drug/alcohol abuser, which grief can resurrect.
Revolting and catty.

Woman bashers?
On a conservative forum....whew
Some things I read here

I could tell you why the forum is often like this but it would hurt feeling of otherwise decent folks
You should read up on this more

Just curious: why did you think I wouldn't research available facts about this situation? Is it because you know I'm a woman? I spent years in the international corporate business world, specifically in the arts/entertainment/media space. I've written above about the financial side of Mick's situation. Why would you just assume I bring nothing?
Let me clarify that again: she may have had assets in her own name, but her friends and the UK press have opined that because Mick had infused so much money, she felt deeply indebted to him regardless of who had legal ownership of the assets. With the business teetering, this was an emotional burden in the days leading up to the end. Males also suffer emotional burdens from debt and debt is a frequent cause of male suicide as well.
You have taken exception to the term “woman-bashing” as if it were a feminist screed on my part. It is not. It is a descriptor of one type of song he sang, among many types of Stones lyrics; just as many female artists sing man-bashing songs. Country radio is full of both types. Just looking at the various elements of the picture. No agenda other than sympathy for both of them.
Well see how as it unfolds how much her personal estate is on the hook for her corporate debt now that she is dead if all that garnars public attention
As far as Stones lyric intent and the mysoginism
I do not care
I detest that silly word devised by ugly chinny urban women
I lived in Manhattan then...
Men who hate women and the women who love them
Bleech
Written espoused by women who don’t like men frankly
That’s the real kernel
A few ladies left though...been married to one two decades now
The pinnacle of my time here actually
Worth noting that the word misogyny had origins in classical Greece in the writings of cultural critics in pre-Christian times.
You seemed to enter the thread (post 65) with eye-rolling anticipation that it would be about its opposite, misandry (male bashing), so I did try to allay your suspicion there. Although a few posters indulged, it was not coming from me. I am more interested in the cultural-shaping aspects of what is communicated in media, and additionally, the bankruptcy of the hedonist lifestyle. Somehow you felt this unworthy of a conservative forum (171).
FWIW, your taking the attitude that I couldn’t possibly be informed after you had linked to a single article was an eye-roller for me, but not seriously. Most vanities, and this thread as well, can’t be considered serious except as regards the tragedy of depression and suicide. Before posting, I had read more than 3 dozen related articles in the US and UK press, due to my background in the business aspects of the entertainment industry as much as having been a Stones fan since 1966. I expressed feelings of sadness and concern, but some posters reacted as if I had blamed Jagger for her decision and was demanding UN treaties to ban that song world-wide.
It would be nice to see conservatives come to terms with the power of words and the precision of their meanings, and how propaganda transmitted through entertainment media shapes behavior, even of so-called Christians.
Again, I salute your chivalry towards your own wife expressed here. FReegards.
Charlie Watts has been married for 50 years.
.
That means nothing.BillyBob Blythe, for example, has been "married" for 30+ years.
No argument there.
