My last two flats were on the right rear. You drive over something and the front tire lifts it up. The back tire catches it and ka-pow. The road is changing all the time. Your husband may have missed the object by half an inch.
It comes down to this. Did you buy road hazard insurance? (Even if you did it might not help. I have 20,000 miles on Michelins and it still cost me $47 to replace a tire because it was worn 3/1000.)
If they’re going to charge you full price then I’d say go to either “Discount Tire” Or Costco. Tires are very competitive. They’ll be within a few dollars. So far I think Discount has the best warranty.

And in Colorado, Discount Tire has the most helpful, knowledgeable and friendly people of any of the tire shops. Costco tire shops around here suck as they’ll do almost anything to avoid honoring their road hazard warranty. At least that was my experience with Costco.
