With the authorities settling on what amounts to air piracy, the Daily Mail is reporting a theory that the pilot of MH370 may have hijacked the plane as a political protest against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's latest sodomy conviction.
The British tabloid revealed that hours before he took command of the Boeing 777-200ER (9M-MRO) bound for Beijing last Saturday, Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah had gone to court on March 7 for the trial and sentencing of Anwar in the sodomy case.
The opposition leader was jailed for five years by the Court of Appeal which had overturned his High Court acquittal for sodomising a former aide in 2008.
The newspaper said police sources confirmed that the 53-year-old captain was a vocal political activist, and were probing into the probability that he would have been profoundly upset by the court ruling.
Yesterday, police searched the veteran pilot's home in Shah Alam, where he keeps a home-made flight simulator.
The Daily Mail added, however, that investigators had already spent much of last week examining two laptops removed from Zaharies home, where one of it is believed to contain data from the simulator.
The report also said despite a series of denials by officials that Zaharie's home was searched, two laptops were taken from his home during low-key visits by police early last week.
His personal laptop was not found, however, and thought to be with him in the cockpit, the Daily Mail reported.
According to Zaharie's co-workers, he was a social activist with fervent support for Anwar and with strong political beliefs, with one colleague saying that the veteran pilot was obsessed with politics.
Zaharie was flying the MH370 alongside co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, from whom investigators have been keen to deflect suspicion, the Daily Mail reported.
Investigators told the British newspaper that they were looking into the theory that Zaharie's political views may have been a factor to consider in the controversy surrounding the missing plane with 239 people onboard.
There are huge sensitivities surrounding this but we cannot afford not to pursue any angle brought to our attention," Daily Mail reported, quoting investigators.
Zaharie is believed to be separated or divorced from his wife although they share the same house, the report said.
The report further stated that the raid on Zaharie's home appeared to be stage-managed as a display of intent after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said at a specially called press conference yesterday that the focus of the investigation was now on crew and passengers as a result of the latest leads.
Stopping short of calling it a hijacking, Najib said yesterday that flight MH370's unusual deviation westwards was consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane.
Western media outlets have quoted American intelligence officials as saying that the jet was flown by an expert after it vanished from radar screens early March 8, 2014, while en route to Beijing.
This has led investigators to vet through all 239 passengers and crew members of the carrier in the hopes of finding facts to counter such attacks.
The Daily Mail report also said that the fact that jet climbed to 13,700m, which is above the service limit, could have been a deliberate attempt to knock out the passengers and crew. March 16, 2014.
The pilot had a plan for revenge. He initiated the plan, then got cold feet, set the plane on auto-pilot and killed himself (hypoxia). The plane ran out of fuel over the Indian Ocean and crashed.
If Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah is a follower of a proponent of democracy, freedom, governance and the need for accountability I dont see such a man finding high jacking a passenger jet full of civilians as furthering these ideals.
But he is a Muslim and that could change his ideals drastically.
There’s a lot of conflicting information, isn’t there, and all the theories are just speculation at this point.
All I’m saying is that if it was an act of terrorism, religious motivation doesn’t add up - political, does. It’s not impossible of course, but particularly with it being an Malaysian flight with primarily Chinese occupants, it’s an awful stretch.
Malaysia does not have serious conflicts with any other country right now. Malaysia is not Pakistan, nor Indonesia. As as source of muslim terrorism, the UK is probably a more likely one than Malaysia except against Israel which they detest.
I can a see a terrorist doing doing this to bring attention to the situation with Anwar, and embarrass and discredit the Malaysian govt. It’s the most obvious explanation if it is indeed terrorism. Of course it might still not be the correct one.
...and not just heist of the plane.
Yup.
Isfahan, Iran
i was assuming he killed them when he flew above 13,700m...
Those atheist pilots are a real problem.
Indonesia?
So sad too many here jump to conclusions without at least trying to understand the facts involved.
Malaysia has had single party rule for many many years. In 2008, an opposition party came as close as ever to defeat the ruling party. Anwar Ibrahim was charged in 2008 for molesting a male campaign worker. It was believed then as now, the charges were trumped up in order to defeat the opposition party. It worked
Anwar was found guilty but on appeal, the conviction was overturned. Then recently the ruling party once again was almost defeated, again led by Anwar.
The ruling party brought the same charges of 2008 again, and the courts found him guilty and sentenced to 5 years for a questionable charge in 2008 and a charge that the courts overturned and threw the charges out.
Now if you really support freedom and peoples rights you might consider the facts a little bit more.i have no idea if he is guilty or not, but certainly it all bullcrap. A government with a boot on its peoples neck. Yeah, kinda like whats happening in the good ole USA.
Your scenario is quite convincing. Captain Zaharie, with his supreme knowledge of the Triple7 thru actual flight time and uncountable hours on his personal simulator, is the most obvious perp in this case. Why would he do it?
Seems like a combination of three things may have caused him to snap:
1; One day before Flight 370, Zaharie was in the courtroom and witnessed the overturn of a succesful Appeal by his political hero,Anwar Bin Ibrahim, for(allegedly trumped-up)charges of sodomy. Zaharie was outraged when he witnessed the Malaysian government-controlled High Court sentence Anwar to 5 years in prison.
2; His domestic problems came to a boil with wife leaving Zaharie's house with his 3 kids
3; The approaching bankruptcy and closing down of Malaysian Airlines has been zinging around in his head for some time.
Difficult to say just what Captain Zaharie had in mind when he took that outbound left turn, but suicide was not his intention--he rages to humiliate the present Government of Malaysia for ripping Anwar Bin Ibrahim off the political chessboard.
And, by God, it's working!
I seriously doubt it.
But if the captain, some fundamental mistakes were made that i would not expect. Mainly climbing to 45,000 feet. Then stalling at 45,000 then taking 25,000 feet to recover.
I suppose all that could be a result of a struggle in the cockpit. As we talked about before. With the known facts (very little) anything is possible.
He never saw a plane. He saw a brief streak of light in the sky. Probably saw a bolide.
so the latest is, it’s a pilot with a midlife crisis? in a pigs eye
If you are protesting, don't you generally have to tell someone you ARE protesting and why? Kinda pointless if you don't.
The plane was probably hijacked by rag heads for a 9/11 style attack and it never made it's intended target. Terrorists tend to be somewhat under qualified, they seem to never get much experience in suicide missions.
I find it odd that the Iranians with stolen passports were immediately discounted because their mothers said they were good boys. But hey, I guess I'm expected to be stupid and ignore the obvious... who you gonna believe, the government or your lying eyes?
On Judge Jeanine tonight, there was mention of Li-ion batteries in the cargo hold. Could be a game changer.
Suppose there is a fire, maybe caused by ruptured batteries, the pilot immediately turned around for emergency descent. Smoke fills the cabin and the fire knocks out all communication. The pilot abruptly climbs in attempt to put out the fire using very high altitude with depressuration. Thinking that works desends and they succomb to the toxic smoke after their oxygen is depleted. Last move, they set the 777 on autopilot. Plane flies for hours and runs out of fuel, or explodes because of the fire.
Plausible.
In an uncontrollable fire, a pilot will not climb “to put out the fire” - we will descend rapidly to land ASAP.
To hijack the plane. Sure that is possible.
To be able to disappear with the plane, not a chance.
The disappearance lends itself to a conspiracy.
The jet is being actively hidden which is only possible in this day and age with state sponsorship.
Somalia is a failed State, Pakistan doesn’t control all areas of their country either. So I don’t think official State sponsorship is needed.
