Updated: Monday, February 17 2014, 08:02 PM EST WEST COLUMBUS (James Jackson/Kelsey Mallahan) -- A familys dog was fatally shot Sunday by police officers after they were called to the home because a moving truck was blocking traffic.
Brittnay Bergman and Dustin Ramsey just moved into the house on South Wayne Ave. They said when officers came to their door, their three to four-year-old Boxer, Delilah, ran out of the house.
"She jumped off the porch, growled at him. Put herself in the corner of our fence and greenhouse," Ramsey said.
Ramsey said that's when the officer grabbed his weapon.
"Shot at the dog nine times. She got nipped once with the first shot. Then the second shot dropped her," Ramsey said. "He [officer] said that he felt like his life was in jeopardy and that he was coming from a high stressful situation," Bergman said.
Now, their other dog is left without its friend and so is Brittnay's son.
"It's my 16-month old's dog and I don't know how I'm going to explain it to him when he comes home from his grandma's," Bergman said.
Bergman and Ramsey said their new home no longer feels like home. They now want to live somewhere else, but spent all of their money on this last move.
Columbus police said they are investigating the incident. They will interview witnesses and determine whether or not the officer followed procedure.
Why are you so hard on that hero? It’s not as though there are any unsolved rapes, robberies or murders he can spend his time investigating.....
Seriously, glad you and yours are safe.
This new trend of cops shooting dogs has become EPIDEMIC!!
Same with cops slamming people around, shooting at them with children in the car,and all manner of other excesses, because they either thought their “lives were in danger” or were made to feel “disrespected”-—it’s more likely this latter factor that’s makes the adrenalin flow, and handily gets conflated with the “my life was in danger” angle. As has been suggested here, there demonstrably is a dynamic which is manifesting itself—the police mindset, that feeds on itself, and creates this vicious cycle, is all of a piece with the growing dstrust of ALL authority, starting with the pain currently being inflicted on us by the Feds on all levels, and it’s not gonna change anytime soon without a concerted effort by a national movement of citizens willing to make a direct and blunt statement to Law Enforcement in general, rather than the enfeebled effort that this local West Columbus incident would predictably become. But where to begin, how to get it off the ground?
They never even did any of this they never followed up with any of the witnesses or my neighbors
