Dunn testified that one man pointed what looked like a gun. After the shooting the victims drove away, then returned with the two badly wounded teens still inside. A cousin of one was called, who then came up, spoke to them and left. then they called for help. Wonder why the police didn’t follow any of this up until weeks later ?

Dunn was stuck with the evidence actually presented and it damned him. Prudence was the better part of valor that night and he chose not to be prudent by seeking fate instead of waiting for it to seek him, a terrible, stupid thing to do when armed. He’ll spend the rest of a very miserable life paying for that stupidity.
One reason might me that they didn't find out about it until a couple of days later when they finally found Dunn and he gave them his side of the story. Had he remained at the scene and talked to the police right from the beginning then a more thorough search for the gun might have been made. Not that it would have found anything since there is no evidence a gun was present to begin with.
