Nine Inch Nails Saw The Fascist Future of the USA
Nine Inch Nails ^ | Trent Reznor

Posted on 02/12/2014 7:50:22 AM PST by Lazamataz

Watch the video

And consider these lyrics, with my notes in red:

I believe I can see the future (easier when you have none)
Cause I repeat the same routine (in a fascist dictatorship, you no longer have choices)
I think I used to have a purpose
But then again That might have been a dream (as our memories of Old America dwindle, it will seem like a dream long ago dreamt)
I think I used to have a voice (we will soon be in a place where we USED to be able to speak freely)
Now I never make a sound (you will not be able to speak freely, lest you be noticed)
I just do what I've been told (like a compliant sheep)
I really don't want them to come around Oh, no (Them: The IRS, EPA, DHS, FBI, TSA, VIPR, and a dozen other agencies)
[Chorus:] Every day is exactly the same (think of the monotony of the Soviet Union)
Every day is exactly the same
There is no love here and there is no pain (no love except what the state declares is allowable, no pain may be spoken of)
Every day is exactly the same
I can feel their eyes are watching (The NSA tracks your every communication. Drones watch your every movement)
In case I lose myself again (do not LOSE YOURSELF, citizen. Be compliant to the State)
Sometimes I think I'm happy here (we will delude ourselves into accepting the new Communist, Fascist state)
Sometimes, yet I still pretend
I can't remember how this got started (I sure can. I've been yelling about this since 1993)
But I can tell you exactly how it will end (So can I. Death camps. Summary executions. Repression of political speech. Exile to re-education camps. Planned starvation.)

No, but I like the song.

I’ve seen the future... bigger than life and twice as ugly, if we’re going to live there you’ll have to drug me.

Head Like a Hole was a better fit with the thread theme.

Have you been able to figure out Young the Giant’s ‘It’s About Time’ yet? I can’t.

Another song that comes to mind is “Silent Running”

Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Don’t believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I’m with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

There’s a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you?)
(Can you hear me) hear me calling you?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running babe?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running?
Calling you, calling you

Lords of Acid, Sisters of Mercy and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, and KMFDM all came to the Grenada in Lawrence, KS and were some awesome concerts! Best of times for me.

Thought you might like this interpretation.

But it is almost less of an interpretation, and more of an outright recital.

Interesting. Look for a lot more rock groups to start speaking to us in lyrics, until they, too, are silenced.

Trent was about 20 years ahead of the curve. He's good like that.

Trent has a bisexual side. That particular song is about his bi-ness.

What is interesting to me is that many of the Industrial and even standard punk groups nailed it. The only thin was they thought the great Satan was the political right.

All kidding aside, a random look through many of the lyrics of those genres lays out exactly the current situation. Sadly, many, like Henry Rollins refuse to admit it. Because they would have to admit they got it 100 percent backwards.

Ever see his wife? If he’s bi, (not doubting you) he’s even more screwed up than he looks.

Coke is a hell of a drug. Heroin too. Not much else would explain it.

Naw. People go bi. Not everyone is wired 100% one way or 100% the other.

Take me. I would hit everything from the original lunar landing gear, to a hot chick, to a Sears wet-and-dry vacuum.
