I also think one should ALWAYS have shoes in which a person could walk a mile or several, even in summer (not just flip-flops). This is especially important for girls/ladies wearing high heels; in reality, how far could you walk with those on?

I make it a policy never to wear shoes I couldn't walk 3 miles in. My "dress shoes" are more boots, but they're nice enough for the office. And at my brother's wedding I danced 6 hours straight with them on.
