I was wrongly expecting the blast wave to turn the rock salt to dust before it left the barrel.

To be sure, a lot of it would just be "salt powder" by the time it left the muzzle. But remember this was something that was common ( in my neck of the woods at least) over 100 years ago....we're not talking about modern shotgun loads.

Although FWIW, I hear you can use Tic Tacs and get a similar result these days. Of, course I would never try such a thing and would discourage anyone else who wanted to. But thanks to the internet you can just about always find some screwball that is....
