That 3rd and 4th stuff doesn’t even seem like it is the same game from what I have seen about it. Some dude told me that the combat sometimes take 1-2 hours+ and you have to use a combat grid, I was like holy cow no wonder no kids are playing it in the library or on the bus any more. Somehow they thought it must be made into an even more dorky spectacle.

Many of the people who otherwise would have been playing D&D are now instead playing online multiplayer computer games.

Of course you are correct. That online stuff isn’t the same deal at all in my book, at least so far. These new editions of D&D still seem like they pushed the casual player right out and replaced them with something else.

And they do a lousy job of advertising it, but Warner Brothers, parent company to Turbine, Inc. has a game called Dungeons and Dragons Online (www.ddo.com) that is quite fun.

I used to play quite a bit of pen & paper D&D and AD&D with my kid brothers and neighborhood friends. I usually ended up being the Dungeon Master, which while rewarding, took a lot of effort to do reasonably well (for me, at least).

Then those same kid brothers, many many years later, hooked me up with DDO. Now I can just simply play again. It can be played totally free-to-play for years, and prices are reasonable if you want to go the pay-to-play route. I've been having great fun since 2010 playing this flawed gem of a game online.
