A man in Australia was bitten by a venomous red-bellied black snake 45 minutes after slicing it in half with a shovel, according to Geobeats.
Jake Thomas, 66, a volunteer at Werris Creek cemetery, was mowing the grass when he noticed the snake on a vase on top of a headstone. Fearing it would harm or scare visitors, he figured he'd kill it with the shovel, geobeats says.
After finishing his work, he returned for the remains of the snake. When he stuck his hand in the vase, he felt it latch on to his hand, and when he pulled it out, he noticed two bite marks.
He was taken to a hospital for anti-venom treatment.
"My hand swelled up for a week, I won't be going near a snake dead or alive for a long time now," he said.
Experts say a snake can keep its bite reflex for up to an hour after death.

This is why I suggest killing snakes into no fewer than 17 pieces

I was in AZ some years ago and the guys chopped a red racer in half and went to lunch. Some time later one of them threw the snake onto some hot pavement and it went nuts without a head.
It had been at least an hour.

That is they way I do it. I use a shovel, I come down on the neck right behind the head and grind until the head is severed. Then I pound the head flat.
That is what I do to copperheads and coral snakes. Rattlesnakes and water moccasins get shot from a little farther distance.

Yep. Seen it before.
I cut the head off a rattler earlier this summer. put the head in the trash and came back three hours latter to find the body still moving.
I have a friend who butchered a sanpping turtle. He chopped the head off and the thing contibnued to walk around the yard. He put a trash can over it, went to work and upon his return found it still able to walk around the yard.

Snakes are fine and necessary. Usually it is jsut the stupid people. Snake don't hunt humans but do hunt all the nasty small mammals humans hate. Eliminating snakes just makes the world safer for the nasties we don't like and ruin tons of human food.
For every snake killed by a human that person should need to klll and eat (or burn) 5 to 10 rats and mice a year. See when a snake kills it it also removes it from our space totally. So don't be stupid and kill snakes, stay away from them.
You can be promised that a snake is not hunting you down for food. In fact, they try to avoid humans. They are afraid of us.

I grew up in rattlesnake country, one even slithered into the house.
My dad in the 60s ALWAYS told us kids to NEVER go near a rattler he had decapitated and left to dry out because they could and did still bite.
I have a healthy fear of rattlers — dead or alive — to this day.

Eliminating snakes just makes the world safer for the nasties we don't like and ruin tons of human food. LOL, my dad gave us kids the exact same lecture when we were growing up. We were surrounded by king, gopher, garter and rattlesnakes --lots of them. Dad wouldn't kill a rattler unless it was close to the house and woe be to anyone who killed a king or gopher snake because dad was AT WAR with gophers and other critters who tore up his garden.
We had a healthy respect for snakes -- and fear of rattlers.

He should have called a snake catcher. I checked the yellow pages. I could not find a snake catcher.
