I really like Gaelic Football, which has some similarities to Aussie Rules.
While dining in a friend’s restaurant I looked up at the TV and saw golf was on. I commented; “Isn’t there any fishing on?” (we’re fishing buddies) I don’t get the eye rolls coming from other diners...
I might mention, I don’t really care to watch any ball sports, or NASCAR, or hockey. I do enjoy Predator Quest, I’ve got all the videos, and all Randy Anderson’s “Calling all Coyotes” too. Even better yet, I like going out there and hunting and fishing as much as possible while I’m healthy enough to do it.
Watching sports is a yawner to me.
I remember watching an episode of "The Simpsons" some years ago, and the family was attending a soccer game. The game had a big buildup, and Homer was real excited. Then the game began. The "excitement" consisted of two players kicking the ball back and forth to each other without progressing towards the goal. Homer became visibly outraged and eventually walked out of the stadium. I think.
At any rate, there was some so-called big soccer game on the tv a few days later, so I decided to check it out. Sure enough, the game started with one team kicking the ball back and forth to each without advancing towards the goal. If one player did get the ball ahead of a defender anywhere near the goal, he was called for being offside, and the whole damned boring process started anew. I didn't watch the whole thing, but it was quite a bit into the game before one side actually got a shot on goal. Which, of course, missed. That's why Americans don't watch soccer.
I’ll believe soccer is more popular than American football when I see non-Asian immigrants playing it in pick-up games. Because Asian immigrants are the only people I’ve seen playing it where I live. Every high school in the area has a soccer team, and their scores are all reported in the papers and on tv. But I wonder if anyone plays it outside of school.
Imagine a US football game where the only players on the field were the kickers. Case closed.
I think once you get a couple of American players who have some success playing in the big European leagues, that will inspire more kids to get serious about playing the game, and more will eschew other sports to focus on soccer, especially if the health concerns about playing football cause more and more parents to not allow their kids to play it.
"I'm gonna keek a touchdown."
“Who watches soccer in the US? Illegals and the families of misguided kids who play it.”
My,what a provincial attitude.
I have a 50 year old son who loves watching the game-—he also loves the NHL,NFL,AND MLB.
He started watching futbol while living in Central America for a short time.
.
communism was the wave of the future at one point. Should we have gotten used to that?
I think the reason that happens (one daughter went from soccer to basketball, the other from soccer to volleyball) is that the high school has a limited number of spots for the soccer team. And those get filled up by the serious club players, and not those from the rec level.
I like football and soccer. For me, both are boring to watch if I don’t have a home-town team to root for in a game. (Whereas my son will watch football and soccer regardless of who is playing.)
Tie games, but at the end of the season, the team with the best record is the champion. Each team plays each other twice home and away, so it's the fairest way to determine a champion. You're not rewarded for getting hot at the right time.
I guess you consider England to be the Third World, because that's where the game was invented.
Probably the greatest drama I’ve seen in sports was the last day of the 2012 season when Manchester City scored twice in injury time to snatch the title away from Manchester United. There are some great videos on YouTube showing reactions of City and United fans, reminded me a lot of this year’s “Iron Bowl.”
Both sports would benefit by having less players. Less players= more scoring. Nine for football and eight for soccer. And while I’m at it, three balls and three strikes in pitchball er baseball. I like offense.
I know, we’ll just make goals in soccer worth 7 points.....problem solved.
5.56mm
That holds true for basketball as well. Something about the knee/leg structure of females that causes them to have more acl injuries per capita than males.
