How hard would it be for some script-kiddie to start counterfeiting bitcoins?

It would be impossible for someone with a script-kiddie to start counterfeiting bitcoins. Millions of computers have access to the blockchain (distributed ledger) and thousands and thousands of “miners” around the world process and validate entries to this ledger in coordination with each other in increasing layers of security made possible by “audit trails” of all the other previous transaction entries to the ledger.

Btw, it is 150 times harder to “mine” Bitcon now, hashing wise, than it was only about eight months ago.
