The best rendition of the National Anthem I ever heard was used by Maryland Public Television for its sign-off back in the ‘80s. It was done by a black singer (I think) with opera training. There was no bending notes or singing ahead of or behind the note. It was done as purely as possible, and with incredible strength. When she got to the part “The land of the fre-eee” her voice went up at least an octave just as effortlessly as if someone had turned a dial. It made you shiver.

What is it about black singers that compels them to insert all sorts of random notes that were never in the song to begin with? And why do they have to take a single syllable and stretch it out and chew on it for like 10 seconds?
Sing it straight, for crying out loud, the way it was written!

From what I gathered from the comments, the performer(s) was/were black females. There is a Soul Singer unwritten rule about the Nations Anthem: It’s Public Domain, so feel free to botch it in any way you can, the more tortured the arrangement, the better. Nobody’s going to sue you.
