Rescue for Antarctic ice-bound ship under threat (Chinese ice breaker may also be stuck)

A rescue mission for a ship trapped in ice in Antarctica is under threat as reports have emerged that one of the assisting vessels may itself be stuck.
Fifty-two passengers and four crew members were due to be evacuated by helicopter from China's Xue Long ship as soon as conditions allowed.
However, the Xue Long has barely moved in a day and may be stuck in the ice.

I wonder why, if there is no danger by delay, the rescue by ships has not been set for a better time with better conditions. Maybe it is more serious than we are being told. Oh well. I can’t spell fruedenshade, but I know what it means.

The Russian nuclear powered icebreakers require cold water to cool their reactors. They cannot be used in the Antarctic because to get there they would have to transit tropical (warm) oceans.
