I'm not certain of the cause. One way I save $ on meat is buying the discounted meat that is close to its sell date. I would not necessarily recommend this with chicken due to its short shelf lfe. I do buy discounted beef regularly. Beef has a longer shelf life. I get about 50% off.
Check the meat aisle in your store to see if there is a discount section.

I always look for steaks which have been reduced because they are near their sell by date. I was talking to the butcher about them and he said he does the same thing. He said they were actually better.
Unfortunately they have begun marking them down only a small amount. They used to really cut the price even to half.
